2001 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling 375th Anniversary
The 2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is one of the great mature dry Rieslings of Alsace, and this bottling is made even more special by the fact that it was released late to mark the house’s 375th anniversary in perfect condition straight from their cellars in Alsace. Maison Trimbach, founded in 1626, is still one of the defining names of Ribeauvillé, and the Cuvée Frédéric Emile, sourced from Geisberg and Osterberg, has long been a benchmark wine. The anniversary release stands apart as a rarer, more collectible expression, thanks to 2001 being one of the most exceptional vintages in Alsace. A celebratory bottling at 25 years old showing beautifully now with the incredible nuance that comes with maturity here, and getting it straight from the cellar in perfect condition without having to store it yourself for a quarter of a century is a very big bonus. We have a limited amount at this fantastic pricing, and it's a no-brainer for fans of Trimbach!
John Gilman 94 points! "The 2001 Cuvée Fred was showing even better in March of this year than it did last year, and is seeming to add both depth and dimension on the palate. This is clearly one of the reference point, great recent vintages for Cuvée Frédéric Émile. The bouquet on the 2001 is fairly closed, but very deep and impressive in its mélange of grapefruit, tart apples, plenty of petrol, sea salts, wet stone minerality and a bit of lemon grass in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid, with a bit more mid-palate core than the lovely 2002 Fred, with brisk acids, great focus and impeccable balance on the very long, stony and intense finish. This is a terrific vintage of Cuvée Frédéric Émile, which I seem to have slightly underrated the last time I tasted it."
Wine Advocate (David Schildknecht) 93 points! "The virtues of the 2001 Trimbach Rieslings will by now be well known to readers, but in another year or two they will release a 2001 Riesling Cuvee Frederic Emile 375th Anniversary representing a small lot of late-picked Osterberg. Smelling of honey and herbal elixir, it offers a creamy texture, refined peach, honey and mint flavors, and a vivid sense of salt, chalk and wet stone minerality. This might ultimately approach the quality of the 2001 Clos Ste-Hune, and will be one to enjoy over a twenty year period, as despite its elegance it is uncannily concentrated (and, incidentally, despite its richness perfectly dry)."
