We tasted this a few days ago with some other top values from across France, and this was our top pick of the tasting. Laroche is one of the big names in Chablis and not a producer we typically offer, but this Bourgogne Blanc really impressed us at this level and is a bit of a different bottle for this Domaine. This is the only wine that Laroche makes that comes from outside the Chablis designation. Laroche holds long-term contracts with a few growers from the Maconnaise, and the Bourgogne Blanc comes from Vire Clesse and Uchizy, two cooler areas of the Macon from 25 to 30 year old vines, with Vire Cleese being one of the top spots in the area. Laroche oversees the entire process, and 2017 is the last vintage where this will come from the Macon, recently focusing on sourcing more fruit from Chablis. It is a unique wine for this address and is drinking incredibly well right now, showing some cool orchard fruits of apple and pear that shift into exotic notes of mango, lychee, and papaya. The palate is delicious, showing the richness that the wines from the Maconnaise can carry but with a lovely lemon-like acidity that brings balance ending on a mineral-citrus note with a touch of lees. The 2017 Laroche Bourgogne Blanc is a great value bottle for Bourgogne Blanc and lands smack in the middle with the characteristic to appeal to the Domestic Chardonnay lover as well as the European one. One of the top Values for Chardonnay we have tasted in a while, coming highly recommended at this level.
