2021 Domaine de Courcel Bourgogne
We have special pricing today on the 2021 Domaine de Courcel Bourgogne Rouge, and it is a delicious Bourgogne that drinks like a village wine. This comes from vines in Pommard on deeper, rock-strewn brown soils at the foot of the slope, with roughly 1 hectare in production, averaging vines around 40 years old, giving more substance and depth than most Bourgognes. 2021, a low-yielding, high-definition vintage in Burgundy, and Courcel’s old-school approach is the same here as with the crus: hand-harvesting, low yields, fermentation in wooden vats with a whole-bunch component to lock in freshness and aromatic complexity, then a long, patient élevage in older oak casks before bottling. The result is a Bourgogne with dark cherry, cranberry, floral perfume, and textbook Pommard earthy minerality showing impressive village-level weight on the palate with some serious structure, and good balance between richness and acidity with a long mineral and red fruit finish. One that can be enjoyed with or without food, this is in a great spot now, but will continue to drink well over the next 5 to 10 years. At this low pricing, it is a no-brainer and is hands down one of the best ways to spend your money in the Bourgogne category.
Decanter (Charles Curtice) 93 points! "Decanter (Charles Cutris MW) 93 pts! This dark-hued wine has an impressively forward mulberry fruit with mineral, leather, and smoke notes. The texture is tannic and structured but not forbidding. It is one of the rare Bourgogne rouges that can be drunk young but will continue to age and improve in the bottles. All the grapes are grown within the commune of Pommard. They are picked late for maximum ripeness (26 September in the 2021 vintage), fermented as whole clusters with vigorous punching down, and aged in mostly older oak casks. (Drink between 2025 - 2035)"
