2022 Vignoble Dampt Bourgogne Tonnerre Le Clos du Chateau Blanc

This was one we tried in a lineup of wines from Dampt Frères, and it stood out, even outperforming the old-vine Chablis. The 2022 Domaine Dampt Frères Bourgogne Tonnerre "Le Clos du Château" Blanc is a single-vineyard Chardonnay grown in the village of Vaulichères (20 mins outside of Chablis proper) from a site known as "l’Épicier" within the historic Clos du Château. The Dampt family—brothers Eric, Emmanuel, and Hervé—are hands-on vignerons based in the Yonne, working across Tonnerre, Chablis, and Irancy with a strong focus on sustainable viticulture and precision winemaking. For this cuvée, the fruit was gently pressed and fermented in a mix of stainless steel and neutral barrels to emphasize freshness and preserve site character. The 2022 vintage presented excellent conditions, yielding wines with exceptional ripeness, clarity, and aging potential. This is a textbook expression of Chardonnay from a lesser-known but high-quality terroir, showing clean citrus, white peach, and subtle smoky mineral tones with bright acidity and a long, focused finish. It's a savvy choice for those seeking serious white Burgundy at an exceptional value, and it's one that really impressed us in this price range.

Tasting Note by John Gilman "The 2022 Bourgogne Tonnerre “Le Clos du Château” from Domaine Dampt Frères is a lovely example of the vintage. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of lemon, apple, chalky minerality, a touch of paraffin, dried flowers and just a whisper of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and focused, with a good core of fruit, fine soil undertow, zesty acids and lovely balance on the long and complex finish. This is as good as many producers’ Chablis AC."
