2023 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux

The 2023 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux shows how far this estate has come in the last five years and is the best wine we have ever tasted from this domaine. Coming from organically farmed vines on the cool, stony terrace above the Combe de Lavaux, this wine is precise and terroir-driven, belonging in the top tier of Gevrey-Chambertin. Chantal Tortochot harvests by hand, ferments mostly destemmed fruit (though 25% whole clusters are used to great effect this vintage) with gentle pump-overs, then ages the wine 14 to 16 months in French oak with a measured share of new and used barrels, letting the site lead. The 2023 brings amazing aromatics and cool, pure fruit—red and black cherry, raspberry, violet, over graphite, crushed rock, and a long, chalk-lined finish. It has an outstanding sense of place and is as pretty approachable right now, but it should hit its stride in a few years and drink comfortably for the next decade or two. This Gevrey checks all the boxes and is a tremendous wine at this price point that gets our highest recommendation!

Vinous (Neal Martin) 93 pts!  The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champeaux 1er Cru contains 25% whole bunch. It has a delightful, precise and detailed bouquet with raspberry and wild strawberry, the oak neatly assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky opening, lovely poise and harmony leading to a graceful finish with plenty of depth. Absolutely no complaints about this excellent Gevrey-Chambertin. (Drink between 2028 - 2045)
